There are many reasons that can cause errors in your drawing but if you keep your you can avoid many inadvertent errors. Most of the drawings containing errors can be repaired using some well-known tools like AUDIT and RECOVER. There are also many drawings which can hardly be repaired by these tools. You can use some workarounds for repairing that kind of drawings using methods mentioned in this article.
Let’s start with the most basic methods of repairing AutoCAD drawings. AUDIT: This command will check for simple errors in the AutoCAD file and it will attempt to fix those errors. To use this command type AUDIT on the command line and press enter, then select Yes from the command line options or type Yes and press enter. AutoCAD will automatically look for errors in the file and it will fix those errors. The number of errors found and repaired can be seen on the command line as shown in the image below. If you want to see the list of errors repaired then change the value of AUDITCTL system variable to 1.
An ADT file will be created in the same location where the AutoCAD file is saved and you can open this file using notepad to see the list of all errors. RECOVER: If AUDIT fails to fix errors in your drawing then you can try using RECOVER tool as well. You can use this tool on severely damaged AutoCAD files as well, the tool will attempt to recover as much data as possible from the drawing.
To use this command type RECOVER on the command line and press enter. Select the affected DWG, DWT or DWS file and click on open. If your drawings happen to contain errors the AutoCAD will repair those errors and open the drawing file with the minimum possible loss of data. A message will appear with the number of errors found and repaired from the drawing as shown in the image above. Backup file: Whenever you save a drawing a backup file is automatically created in the same folder in which drawing is present. The backup file has BAK extension and it will be created only when the value of ISAVEBAK system variable is set to 1. If drawing shows errors after recent system failures, crashes or bugs then you can recover the previous version of the drawing from this backup file.
To recover the drawing from backup file rename it to DWG extension. Write Block: This option should only be used if all of the mentioned methods of drawing recovery fails to recover the drawing. Using this method you can export portions of the drawing to an external file but a lot of data like layer information, custom text styles or blocks will be lost.
Corrupt Files
To use this tool open affected drawing and type WBLOCK on the command line and press enter. Select Objects from Source panel and pick a point in the drawing then select complete drawing using a selection or crossing window.
Avoid selecting complete drawing by pressing CTRL+A as this might select zero length and unnecessary geometries from the drawing. Specify a location to save exported drawing and click OK to export the geometries from drawing. EXPORTTOAUTOCAD: Many DWG compatible applications or plugins may create some custom objects which can also cause errors in the drawing. You can remove these custom objects and change them to AutoCAD compatible format. When a drawing is opened in AutoCAD and it fails to find the application which created the custom object then it creates a proxy object which has limited capabilities compared to the original object. You can convert these proxy objects to AutoCAD supported objects using -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD command.
To use this tool open the drawing containing proxy objects and type -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD then press enter thrice. A new drawing file with ACAD prefix will be added to the same folder in which affected drawing is present. In this drawing, all of the custom objects will be exploded to AutoCAD supported format. Try these too: You can also try to attach damaged drawings as XREF and then bind XREF in the current drawing. Inserting a drawing directly into another clean drawing using block import command can also recover a lot of information from the affected drawing. But these tools should only be used if you are completely unable to open the drawing using AutoCAD. Do you have questions related to this tip?
We have heard of many VW drivers you have ended up not just messing up their in-car GPS navi system, but also their PC or Mac. We always recommend installing legitimate map updates, and the following models are available should you wish to buy an official version DVD, rather than download a torrent copy of the DVD, CD, or disc. It seems like your AutoCAD Autosave time is extended or disabled. Unfortunately if drawing is not recovered using all of the methods mentioned above then you need to re-create it. But you can ensure that it keeps on saving file in future for that Save this lisp file in C:Program FilesAutodeskAutoCAD 201xSupport where 201X is the version of your AutoCAD. Download file from this link Sometimes Autosave is disable automatically due to some scripts running in background but it fails to start again so to ensure it starts every time you start your AutoCAD application you can save the script as mentioned above, this lisp will ensure that every time AutoCAD starts it will load that file which tells AutoCAD to make an Autosave every 15 minutes.
One method for recovering corrupt drawings is to insert the drawing into a new blank drawing. However, when you use this method your layouts are not recovered.
Solution You can use AutoCAD DesignCenter to copy layout information that otherwise would be lost. After inserting the corrupt drawing in AutoCAD 2000, save the new drawing with the inserted objects. Select Tools AutoCAD DesignCenter, then select the Desktop icon.
In the DesignCenter tree view, navigate to the corrupt file and select it. Click the plus sign (+) in the box to the left of the drawing icon and select Layout Below.
If the drawing is not overly corrupted, the existing layout(s) will display in the contents of the DesignCenter window. Select the layout(s) and drag them into the current drawing. To remove a layout right-click on it at the bottom of the AutoCAD editing window and selecting Delete. You can also use this procedure to restore External References lost as a result of file corruption. Important: Run the AUDIT command after adding each layout, in case the newly inserted layout was originally the cause of the corrupt drawing.
Also, save your drawing after each AUDIT command so that if one layout does corrupt the drawing, your losses will be minimal. From AutoDesk's support page.
Dear Sirs, I tried each method listed here but was unable to recovermy dwg files. I was burning files to the CD and was unable to complete the funtion becasue the files were to large to copy to the disk. I discontinued the process.
Freestyle dash for xbox 360. I removed the file copy icon. I think this caused the file to be invalid.
I did not know that the dwg files would not open after what I had done. Is there any possible means of correcting the invalid file so they will open.
Is there a program that that will fix the problem.
If still the drawing persists with problems, continue on to the next set of steps. These can be done in any order, but have been listed in the order that Autodesk recommends makes the most sense. The file can be checked after each step. If things appear back to normal, there is no need to continue on to the rest of the steps.
Open a blank DWG and type RECOVER at the command line. Browse to the problematic file to allow AutoCAD a chance to restore the file.
Type OVERKILL at the command line, and select all objects. Check or uncheck properties to include or ignore, then click OK.
Type DELCON at the command line, and select all objects. Type BREP and select all objects (if there are solids or surfaces in the file) Type -SCALELISTEDIT, then 'R' for reset, then 'Y' for yes. Type FILTERS, then click on the 'delete filters' button. Try using a different version of AutoCAD to open the drawing, such as AutoCAD 2013 vs. AutoCAD 2015 or plain AutoCAD vs. AutoCAD Architecture, etc.
Try different computers if available. Open a blank DWG, and try to attach the problematic file as an XREF. If it allows you to attach the file, try next to BIND it to the current file. If that works, run the repair steps listed above. Use the SAVEAS command to save the DWG in an older file format.
Recover Corrupt Files
Attempt to open the newly created file. Export the file to DXF format using the DXFOUT command. Next, open a blan DWG and use the DXFIN command to import the file just created. Restore the Layout tabs: Right-Click one of the default layout tabs Select 'From Template.' Open the original file Choose the layout tabs to restore. (It is recommended to do this one tab at a time, in case one or more layout tabs are corrupted) Move drawing objects between model and paper space.
You may find that only one drawing space is usable in your file, although your main concern is model space: Create a new layout and if need be, create a viewport. Use CHSPACE to move all the geometry to paper space. Create a new drawing and use the Design Center (ADC) to move the layout from the damaged file into it. Use CHSPACE again to move the geometry back to model space. Restore the original layouts from the bad file using the Design Center. Dissect the drawing.
In a copy of the file, conduct a process of elimination using QSELECT to select different object types and then delete them to see if that fixes what is wrong in the file. Do PURGE All after each deletion. Eventually you should remove the problem elements and then you can choose to leave them out, copy them in again from another file, recreate them, or further troubleshoot individual items to pinpoint exactly which one is problematic. A quick start to this whole process is to delete everything in the drawing and then test it. This will quickly tell you if the issue is with a drawing object or if it is a part of the drawing database.

AutoDesk has some suggestions for repair here. If neither of the above options allow you to open the DWG, move on to the next set of steps. These steps can be tried one at a time. Be sure to stop and try to open the file after each one. If the file opens, there is no need to continue to the rest of the steps.

Open a blank DWG and run the RECOVER command. Select the problematic file. AutoCAD will attempt to recover the file and open it. Open a blank DWG and run the RECOVERALL command.

Even more, if you are truly lucky, shoot cannonballs and attack other pirates’ islands and loot their forbidden treasures and cash. Spin the pirates wheel and win free coins - a true pirate can never have enough cash!
Select the problematic file. AutoCAD will attempt to recover the file and open it. Open a blank DWG and run the INSERT command.
Select the problematic file and see if it will insert. If it does, then run EXPLODE and select the inserted block. Run AUDIT and PURGE commands, and then use SAVEAS to create a new DWG. Look in the same directory where the DWG resides and see if there is a BAK file of the same name.
If so, rename the BAK extension to DWG and see if the file can then be opened. Look in C: Windows Temp for files with an SV$ extension. If any exist with a similar name to the corrupted DWG file, then rename the extension to DWG and see if it can then be opened. Go to your backup system and restore the file from a time before it became corrupted. Note: Im kinda new to here. If I am supposed to do links and quotes differently let me know what I need to change.
I recommend you spend 5 minutes making it so people can read the answer. It being in a quote block while correct makes I also extremely hard to read without scrolling said quote block which of course makes it difficult to read. So format block and the answer since there are multiple steps involved. You wanted reputation, you fixing this answer, is how that will happen.
I could format the answer for you, but you won't improve if I do that, and that means you won't accomplish your goal. – Feb 17 '15 at 19:44.
